When did you join TIKS?
I joined TIKS in March 2018, fresh from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
What made you decide to be a software engineer?
I would like to pretend it part of grand plan, but it wasn’t.
I became a software engineer out of curiosity. From a young age, I had a hard time keeping toys. I would always open them up to see what’s going on under the hood. As I grew older, I became fascinated with computers. Again, my curiosity kicked in to understand how they work. From one link to another, I ended up choosing software engineering as my major.
You’ve been working on some interesting projects at TIKS, what were some insightful learnings?
Working on multiple projects taught me humility, the hard way 😀. Upon completing a project I have a big feeling of accomplishment that I tend to transfer to the next project, just to learn that they are completely different and whatever I thought I knew, I know nothing.
Switching from one project to another is sometime challenging. I love challenges. I feed on them. Working at TIKS has taught there is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to software. I now approach each project based on its specificities and requirements.
What advice would you give someone who is interested in being a software engineer?
I would tell them, "run while you can!". Once you start loving it, it’s too late for you. Software engineering is like a drug. It’s fulfilling.
Software engineers run the world. We are everywhere; from the smallest devices to space stations in space, we make things happen. It’s not a fluke that civilisation advancement is directly correlated to their technological advancement.
If you are an aspiring software engineer, you have made the right choice. Welcome aboard!
What’s your most used emoji?
😀
If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?
Time travel; no brainer. I won’t try to change anything, I simply have a big curiosity. I will move around in time to scope out things. For instance, who and how were the pyramids built? Was there life on Mars? What’s going on in the year 3000? Does everyone become vegan by the year 3000? Do we still use pronouns like he/she?
You you could only have 3 apps on your smartphone, which would you pick?
WhatsApp, Commbank and Gmail.
